Shakespeare & Company at Midnight
Latin Quarter, 5th Arrondissement
★★★★FreeComfortable
Would we book again? Yes.
During the day, Shakespeare & Company is a tourist attraction. There's a queue for photos, a gift shop, and a café next door selling branded tote bags. It's fine. It's not the point.
The point is going after 10pm, when the last tour group has left and the shop settles back into what it actually is: a labyrinth of books in a 17th-century building across from Notre-Dame. The upstairs reading room has beds where writers still sleep — the 'Tumbleweeds' program continues. The cat is usually around.
Field Notes
The Timing
After 10pm on a weeknight is the sweet spot. The shop closes around midnight but the staff are relaxed about it if you're actually reading.
The Spot
The upstairs reading nook with the window facing Notre-Dame — bring a book you've been meaning to start and give it an hour.
The Purchase
Buy something. The shop stamps every book with their iconic stamp. It's the best souvenir from Paris that costs less than €20.
The Clipper Detail
“Ask if George is around — the shop's resident cat. He's usually asleep in the poetry section upstairs. Finding him is half the experience.”
